Sisterbration Little Red Dress Event

I had a blast with my fellow Queen sisters at the Sisterbration Little Red Dress Event. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women and on February 3rd we stood up to say we will learn the early signs of heart disease and we will not let yourself or anyone we know become another statistic.

Everyone should know the signs if they are having a heart attack or a stroke.

Heart Attack:
  • Chest Discomfort
  • Discomfort in other upper areas of the body
  • Shortness of Breath
Stroke:
  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or legs; especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden sever headache with no cause
Please if  you have any of these systems don't just shrug it off, call 911 as your life could depend on it.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Domestic violence sees no color, age, sex, race, culture, religion, education, employment or marital status. Violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.), sexual abuse, and stalking. Also emotional, psychological and financial abuse are included even though they are not criminal behaviors. The violence can take many forms and can happen all at once or only once in a while. A current trend has been the abusers and abuses are getting younger and younger. Dating violence is now a huge problem in high school and even middle schools.

If you are being abused please remember:
     1. You are not alone.
     2. It is not your fault.
     3. Help is available.

One of the most common myths are that "if is were that bad, wouldn't she just leave." Not leaving does not mean that the situation is okay or that the victim wants to be abused. Leaving can be dangerous. The most dangerous time for a women who is being a abused is when she tries to leave (United States Department of Justice, National Crime Victim Survey, 1995).

Statistics:
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the United States are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives (CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey 2005).
  • An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year (Costs of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in the United States).
  • Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police (Frieze, L.H and Browne A.,1989).
  • 1 out of 3 women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her life (Silverman, J.G; Raj, A and Clements K).
  • 1 in 5 female high school students reports being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner(The Journal of the American Medical Association, 2001).
  • 1 in 3 teens report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, slapped, choked or physically hurt by his/her partner (Liz Claiborne Inc. Teen Relationship Abuse Survey 2006).
Remember that domestic violence should not happen to anybody. Ever. Period. Domestic violence is everybody's business! So please join me in supporting Domestic Violence Awareness.

About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast tissue divide and grow without normal control. It is a widespread and random disease, striking women and men of all ages and races. It is the most prevalent cancer in the world today, with about 1.3 million people diagnosed annually. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, and at this time, there is no cure.
But there is hope. Thanks to heightened awareness, early detection through screening, improved treatment methods and increased access to breast health services, people have a greater chance of survival than ever before.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure national website, komen.org, offers comprehensive information about breast cancer risk factors, early detection and screening, diagnosis and treatment. Developed in conjunction with the Harvard School of Public Health, the site offers a one-stop resource for all the latest information on the disease.

CASA of Collin County

I had the pleasure to volunteer at the CASA of Collin County Voice for Children Gala 2011 themed Mardi Gras Masquerade Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Collin County was incorporated in 1991 to provide trained community volunteers to advocate in the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in the court system. CASA's mission statement is 'to provide trained community volunteers to advocate the best interests of abused and neglected children involved in the court system. CASA's goals is for the volunteers to be a voice for these children in court. The results is that each child is place into a safe, loving home where he or she can thrive. I was working at one of the silent auction tables and I got to meet a bunch of interesting people along the way. This was an awesome event to be part of and I can't wait for next year to volunteer my time again, especially since it is for such a great cause.

Here are some pictures from the event:

Giving Back and Making a Difference

I am so excited about getting out and volunteering more! The three main organizations that I will be working with are:

http://www.hopesdoorinc.org/

The Mission of Hope's Door
To offer intervention and prevention services to individuals and families impacted by domestic abuse and to provide educational programs that enhance the community's capacity to respond.
Hope's Door is a shelter and counseling center that offers comprehensive programs and services that are designed to help break the cycle of domestic abuse. Hope's Door provides direct intervention and prevention services to families affected by domestic abuse in Collin County, Dallas County, and surrounding areas.
When Hope's Door first opened its doors in 1986, the agency operated a 24-hour crisis line, but did not have the space to provide shelter. Clients were housed at local hotels. In 1989, the agency opened its own shelter and began providing temporary housing to victims of domestic abuse. Since 1989, Hope's Door has provided safe shelter for over 3,787 women and their children, and answered over 16,000 crisis line calls.

Dress For Success's mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged
women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

http://www.operationkindness.org/index.php

Founded in 1976, Operation Kindness is the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas. We have saved nearly 65,000 animals since our inception. We care for an average of 200-250 animals on a day-to-day basis, with another 60-80 animals in foster homes. More than 3,000 dogs and cats are assisted by Operation Kindness each year.
The mission of Operation Kindness is to provide quality care for homeless or unwanted cats and dogs in a compassionate, no-kill environment until they are adopted into responsible, loving homes, and to be a leader in our community in promoting humane values through education and awareness.

The reason I picked the above three as my main organizations to give back to is that they each hold a special place in my heart. I have witnessed first hand the effects of domestic violence and the courage it take a women (or man) to come forward and ask for help and to get out of the current situation they are in. Hope's Door is a place for one to find the safeness they have lost and a place to rebuild themselves back to the strong person they use to be. After difficult events in a women's life it can be hard for her to get back on her feet and for her to feel like she is part of society again. Dress For Success does just that and does it in a atmosphere that makes every women that walks through their doors welcome. But not only people are abused and neglected. Millions of cats and dogs are left to die each year. They have no voice for themselves so the people that care and love for them have to be that voice. What what happens when they don't have a voice? If they are lucky they will end up in a no-kill animal shelter, like Operation Kindness, were they can recover and find a new loving family to give them their voice back. At the end of the day our voice is the strongest tool we have to use. So don't let it get lost and always stay strong.

I will also be attending many other functions and working with other organizations during the year!
