Mix Up Workouts To Crank Your Metabolism

Boost your calorie-burning potential with these three fitness regimens

By Amanda Vogel

Have you ever watched a slender woman take down a big bowl of ice cream and wondered, Where does she put it? She doesn't put it anywhere, actually. Most likely, she has a Maserati-fast metabolism that incinerates fat before it has a chance to take up residence on her thighs.

Jealous? Don't be. While genetics counts for part of your metabolic efficiency, you can give Mother Nature a kick in the pants by simply tweaking your fitness regimen.

"Your body adapts to exercise over time, which causes your metabolism to fall into a lull," says Geoff Bagshaw, group fitness manager at the Equinox fitness club in Miami. "Adding variety to your workouts will help you break through plateaus so you continue to see results."

Intensity matters too: Exercising harder promotes the growth of lean muscle, which burns more calories during and after your workout, says Craig Ballantyne, owner of TurbulenceTraining.com. The three strength-training techniques on these pages will inject a powerful double shot of variety and intensity into your usual routine. Replace one of your regular workouts each week with one of these training methods and watch those extra pounds melt away

Contrast training

This technique involves doing a resistance exercise with weights, and then immediately following it with an explosive body-weight exercise that works the same muscle group. "In contrast training, the movement pattern of the second exercise should always mimic the first one," says sports performance specialist Barry Lovelace, owner of FitQuest Fitness in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In other words, chest presses should be followed by explosive pushups, or dumbbell squats followed by squat jumps.

Fat-trimming trick: Busting out an explosive move after a strength move trains your body to recruit more muscle fibers. Researchers at the University of California at Santa Cruz found that this type of workout (also called concurrent training) increases lean muscle mass while it decreases body-fat percentage.

Try it: Hold a 10-to 20-pound dumbbell in each hand, stand with your feet hip-width apart, and lower into a squat (as if you're sitting into a chair) for five to 10 reps. Then ditch the dumbbells and do five to 10 jump squats: Lower into a squat, then push through your heels to jump off the ground; land softly and immediately lower into another rep. Rest for one to three minutes, then repeat the sequence, working your way up to five or six sets.

Pyramid training

You'll do three or more sets of the same exercise, starting with light resistance and high reps, then increasing the weight and decreasing the reps with each set. A full workout of pyramid sets can be tough (and time consuming), so start by working one upper-body and one lower-body exercise into the end of your workout, says Ballantyne. This way, you won't exhaust the key muscle groups you need to complete your regular routine.

Fat-trimming trick: Unlike other intense workouts that build strength, this technique emphasizes muscular endurance (the rate at which your body can continually produce force), which can increase your fat-burning rate.

Try it:Holding a pair of dumbbells at your sides, step forward with your right foot and lower your body until your right knee is bent 90 degrees. Return to standing, and continue for a total of 15 reps. Repeat with the left leg, then rest for 20 seconds before doing the second set: 10 to 12 reps, using a slightly heavier weight. Rest, then increase the weight again and do six to eight reps.

Tabata method

Fast-and-furious intervals—20 seconds of all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest—are repeated a total of eight times (for a grand total of four minutes). Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario found that exercising as hard as you can for short periods of time is as effective at improving muscle and metabolism as sweating it out longer at a lower intensity.

Fat-trimming trick: All-out effort keeps your heart rate zipping for the entire workout (even during the rests) and for hours after you kick off your sneakers. The end result? You burn extra calories.

Try it: Bagshaw suggests this three-move sequence: Starting with exercise one, do as many reps as you can with proper form in 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, then continue for a total of eight intervals. Rest for two minutes, then go to exercise two and do eight intervals. Take another two-minute breather, then do eight intervals of exercise three.

1. Lunges with biceps curls: Holding dumbbells at your sides, step back and lower into a lunge, curling the weights up to your shoulders. Stand and repeat, alternating legs.

2. Squats with overhead presses: Hold dumbbells at shoulder height and lower into a squat. Press the dumbbells directly overhead as you stand.

3. Pushups: From a pushup position (or modified pushup position, with your knees on the ground), bend your elbows to lower your chest to the floor.

Staying Motivated

As the first month of 2011 is coming to an end some might be having a hard time keeping motivated with their New Year's resolutions to workout. Here are some tips to keep the fire burning from the Mayo Clinic.

1. Set goals

Start with simple goals and then progress to longer range goals. Remember to make your goals realistic and achievable. It's easy to get frustrated and give up if your goals are too ambitious.

2. Make it fun

Find sports or activities that you enjoy, then vary the routine to keep you on your toes. If you're not enjoying your workouts, try something different.

3. Make physical activity part of your daily routine

If it's hard to find time for exercise, don't fall back on excuses. Schedule workouts as you would any other important activity. You can also slip in physical activity throughout the day. Be creative!

4. Put it on paper

Write it down! Seeing the benefits of regular exercise on paper may help you stay motivated. It may also help to keep an exercise diary.

5. Join forces with friends, neighbors or others

You're not in this alone. Invite friends or co-workers to join you when you exercise. Work out with your partner or other loved ones.

6. Reward yourself

After each exercise session, take a few minutes to savor the good feelings that exercise gives you. This type of internal reward can help you make a long-term commitment to regular exercise. External rewards can help, too. When you reach a longer range goal, treat yourself to a new pair of walking shoes or new tunes to enjoy while you exercise.

7. Be flexible

If you're too busy to work out or simply don't feel up to it, take a day or two off. Be gentle with yourself if you need a break. The important thing is to get back on track as soon as you can.

Keep up the hard work and treat yourself. You have almost made it though the first month of your workout journey.

Grad School - 4th Semester Starts

So this past week my 4th semester of Grad School started. I am taking two classes one online and the other on campus. My online class is Global Fashion Retailing which I am really excited about and should help expand my knowledge on retailing strategies. The other class is Research Applications, which is every Monday night, and is mostly about statistics. This is the class that I am worried about the most; I know I can do it but I never knew that creating and working on a thesis would be so much work. I have enjoyed my first three semesters and I look forward to this semester and the ones to follow. If you are interested in obtaing you Masters in Merchandising check out the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management.

Slim and Tone With Kettlebells Workouts: self.com

Slim and Tone With Kettlebells Workouts: self.com
It's no wonder kettlebells get such a ringing endorsement from the pros: They're better-body multitaskers, zapping calories while sculpting sexy muscle tone. Try the moves created exclusively for SELF by Sarah Lurie, founder of Iron Core Kettlebell Strength and Conditioning in San Diego.
You'll need:
A 10- to 15-pound kettlebell ($24.99 and up; GoFit.net). Switch to a heavier one as you get stronger.
The plan:
Do three sets of the indicated reps of each move three times a week on nonconsecutive days.

Overhead Press
Stand with feet hip-width apart, a kettlebell in right hand, elbow bent, with ball of kettlebell resting on back of right forearm at right shoulder. Press right arm straight overhead (as shown). Bend elbow, returning kettlebell to right shoulder, for 1 rep. Do 5 reps. Switch sides; repeat.
WORKS SHOULDERS, ARMS, ABS, BUTT, LEGS

Tactical Lunge
Stand with feet hip-width apart, a kettlebell in both hands in front of you, arms down. Step left leg back into a lunge, releasing right hand; pass kettlebell under right leg from left hand to right (as shown), then return to start. Repeat on opposite side for 1 rep. Do 5 reps.
WORKS ABS, BUTT, LEGS

Deck Squat
Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding kettlebell horns (sides of handle), arms down. Lower butt to sit on floor; bend elbows so kettlebell is in front of chest, arms inside legs. Roll onto back, keeping knees bent (as shown), then roll forward, placing feet on floor to rise to a low squat, extending arms at chest level. Snap hips as you straighten legs and lower arms for 1 rep. Do 10 reps.
WORKS ABS, BUTT, LEGS

The Halo
Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding kettlebell upside down, hands on horns, at chest level, elbows bent. Keeping elbows bent, lift and circle kettlebell around head counterclockwise (as shown), then return to start. Repeat, circling kettlebell clockwise, for 1 rep. Do 5 reps.
WORKS SHOULDERS, ABS, OBLIQUES

One-Arm Swing
Stand with feet slightly wider than hip-width apart, a kettlebell on floor between feet. Squat and grab kettlebell handle with right hand, left hand at side. In a fluid motion, lift kettlebell and swing it back between legs, then forward and up to shoulder level, snapping hips and shifting weight to heels as you rise to stand, lifting left arm out to side (as shown). Release, swinging kettlebell back between legs, for 1 rep. Do 5 reps. Switch sides; repeat.
WORKS SHOULDERS, ARMS, BACK, ABS, BUTT, LEGS

Swing-Catch-Squat
Stand with feet slightly wider than hip-width apart, kettlebell on floor between feet. Squat and grab handle with both hands, palms down; swing kettlebell back between legs, then forward as you snap hips and rise to stand. When kettlebell reaches shoulder level, release handle, catching horns, elbows bent, then squat (as shown). Stand, changing grip so hands are on top of handle, arms down, for 1 rep. Do 10 reps.
WORKS SHOULDERS, BACK, ABS, BUTT, LEGS

Week 2 of 5-A-Week Workouts

Hey All,

So I think my body is getting use to waking up a 4AM to get my workout in. This week had an additional factor that we normally would have to deal with. What was it? It was some of the coldest weather of the year so far with windchills in the single digits, ice and snow that lasted for more than one day. I grew up in Minnesota so one would think I wouldn't be fazed by it but I have acclimated to Texas weather quite fast. But back to the workout. If you want a full body workout try doing some burpee's. So how do you do a burpee you ask:
  • Begin in a squat position with hands on the floor in front of you
  • Kick your feet back to a pushup position
  • Immediately return your feet to the squat position
  • Leap up as high as possible from the squat position
  • Repeat, moving as fast as possible
Until next time. Keep your fitness goal and you can do anything you put your mind too!

My Platform: Breaking the Silence and Ending the Cycle of Domestic Violence

All contestants of Miss Texas International pageant pick a platform to stand for during their year of reign and while a local title holder. The platform that I am supporting is "breaking the silence and ending the cycle of Domestic Violence." The act of domestic violence is one that I have witnessed first hand and hence why it has a special place in my heart. My goal is to educate the public about domestic violence and help anyone get out of any situation that could be dangerous to their health and well being. So please help me stop this senseless act of violence.

What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Domestic violence sees no color, age, sex, race, culture, religion, education, employment or marital status. Violence can be criminal and includes physical assault (hitting, pushing, shoving, etc.), sexual abuse, and stalking. Also emotional, psychological and financial abuse are included even though they are not criminal behaviors. The violence can take many forms and can happen all at once or only once in a while. A current trend has been the abusers and abuses are getting younger and younger. Dating violence is now a huge problem in high school and even middle schools.

If you are being abused please remember:
     1. You are not alone.
     2. It is not your fault.
     3. Help is available.

One of the most common myths are that "if is were that bad, wouldn't she just leave." Not leaving does not mean that the situation is okay or that the victim wants to be abused. Leaving can be dangerous. The most dangerous time for a women who is being a abused is when she tries to leave (United States Department of Justice, National Crime Victim Survey, 1995).

Statistics:
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the United States are victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives (CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey 2005).
  • An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year (Costs of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in the United States).
  • Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police (Frieze, L.H and Browne A.,1989).
  • 1 out of 3 women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her life (Silverman, J.G; Raj, A and Clements K).
  • 1 in 5 female high school students reports being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner(The Journal of the American Medical Association, 2001).
  • 1 in 3 teens report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, slapped, choked or physically hurt by his/her partner (Liz Claiborne Inc. Teen Relationship Abuse Survey 2006).
Remember that domestic violence should not happen to anybody. Ever. Period. Domestic violence is everybody's business! So please join me in supporting Domestic Violence Awareness.

Giving Back and Making a Difference

I am so excited about getting out and volunteering more! The three main organizations that I will be working with are:

http://www.hopesdoorinc.org/

The Mission of Hope's Door
To offer intervention and prevention services to individuals and families impacted by domestic abuse and to provide educational programs that enhance the community's capacity to respond.
Hope's Door is a shelter and counseling center that offers comprehensive programs and services that are designed to help break the cycle of domestic abuse. Hope's Door provides direct intervention and prevention services to families affected by domestic abuse in Collin County, Dallas County, and surrounding areas.
When Hope's Door first opened its doors in 1986, the agency operated a 24-hour crisis line, but did not have the space to provide shelter. Clients were housed at local hotels. In 1989, the agency opened its own shelter and began providing temporary housing to victims of domestic abuse. Since 1989, Hope's Door has provided safe shelter for over 3,787 women and their children, and answered over 16,000 crisis line calls.

http://www.dressforsuccess.org/affiliate.aspx?sisid=112&pageid=1

Dress For Success's mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged
women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

http://www.operationkindness.org/index.php

Founded in 1976, Operation Kindness is the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas. We have saved nearly 65,000 animals since our inception. We care for an average of 200-250 animals on a day-to-day basis, with another 60-80 animals in foster homes. More than 3,000 dogs and cats are assisted by Operation Kindness each year.
The mission of Operation Kindness is to provide quality care for homeless or unwanted cats and dogs in a compassionate, no-kill environment until they are adopted into responsible, loving homes, and to be a leader in our community in promoting humane values through education and awareness.

The reason I picked the above three as my main organizations to give back to is that they each hold a special place in my heart. I have witnessed first hand the effects of domestic violence and the courage it take a women (or man) to come forward and ask for help and to get out of the current situation they are in. Hope's Door is a place for one to find the safeness they have lost and a place to rebuild themselves back to the strong person they use to be. After difficult events in a women's life it can be hard for her to get back on her feet and for her to feel like she is part of society again. Dress For Success does just that and does it in a atmosphere that makes every women that walks through their doors welcome. But not only people are abused and neglected. Millions of cats and dogs are left to die each year. They have no voice for themselves so the people that care and love for them have to be that voice. What what happens when they don't have a voice? If they are lucky they will end up in a no-kill animal shelter, like Operation Kindness, were they can recover and find a new loving family to give them their voice back. At the end of the day our voice is the strongest tool we have to use. So don't let it get lost and always stay strong.

I will also be attending many other functions and working with other organizations during the year!

First Week of 5 Day-A-Week Workouts

So this past week was my first week of doing 3 bootcamps (M,W,F) and 2 semi-private workouts (T,TH). It felt great getting back to working out after a two week break and the holiday season. The bootcamps felt great and I was happy to see the other members that I have been working out with. The two semi-private workouts is were I felt it the most. Each day I walked out of the gym feeling great but boy, did I feel it later in the day. But I was always told "no pain no gain" and I am there to gain a new me. I know there will be times that I might want to skip a day but I have to think of the end goal and that will keep me going. I am glad that my whole team at work is supportive of my goals and are standing behind me. I am also lucky to have a great friend working out with me during the bootcamps. We will push each other to greatness! So here to a new year and a new start.

Kettlebells

So you might be wondering what are these Kettlebells because I will be talking about them a lot. Why? Because they are fabulous!

Kettlebells are bowling ball-sized cast iron weights with a single looped handle on top. Kettlebells range in weight from two lbs. to over 100 lbs. Kettlebells requires focus on whole-body conditioning because lifting and controlling a kettlebell forces the entire body, and specifically the core, to contract as a group, building both strength and stability at the same time.

John Porcari, Ph.D., an exercise researcher at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse and FITNESS advisory board member, recently put these tools to the test in his exercise lab and discovered that people who did an intense 20-minute workout with kettlebells burned, on average, an astounding 400 calories, or 20 calories a minute (Fitness Magazine, 2011). "That's equivalent to running a mile at a six-minute pace," says Porcari, who believes that the megaburn occurs because kettlebells combine cardio and strength training and use several muscle groups at once (Fitness Magazine, 2011).

So get yourself some kettlebells and start to see the changes. But always make sure to use the right techniques or you could hurt yourself.
